Design Commission Approves New Development at SW 3rd and Taylor

The Design Commission approved plans for a new office space at SW 3rd and Taylor. The building will be ten stories, and was designed by Ankrom Moisan Architects. While the majority of the building will be designated for office space, there will also be 9,530 sq ft of retail space incorporated. The building will also have two levels of underground automobile parking, as well as 124 bike parking spaces.

The new building will replace the Ancient Order Of United Workmen Temple, which currently stands on the property. The building is not protected by historic status, though it was designated as eligible to be included on the National Register. It is currently vacant, with parts of the building having remained vacant since the 1950s. The owner requested the building’s removal from the Historic Resources Inventory in November 2015.

The new building was approved by the Commission after several changes were made to the design. Commissioners praised the project for how far it has come from the original design, though the loss of the Temple Building remained a focal point throughout the hearing.
