Is a New Bike Bridge Coming to NW Portland?

Last month Connect Oregon, a lottery-funded program designed to invest in Oregon’s transportation infrastructure, received 22 biking and walking project proposals for new off-road transportation investments. Of those, a $5.9 million biking-walking bridge connecting the Northwest District straight to the Steel Bridge via Flanders Street scored 3rd overall.

Originally proposed back in 2008, the project was close to fruition before being shelved indefinitely due to “shifting details and election politics” according to bikeportland.org. Now, if the project’s score survives the second and third rounds of rankings, work could begin as early as next year.  The bridge would span I-405 at NW Flanders Street and give bicyclists a safe, easy alternative to the existing freeway crossings in NW. The city estimates the bridge could attract 3,000 crossings per day to start, and up to 9,000 per day once a corresponding neighborhood greenway is built along Flanders.
